Legacy Standards

IEEE1014-1987

32 bit addressing and data path. This was the first VMEbus specification homologated by a widely recognised national or international body. Previous to this, VMEbus was specified by the "VITA Technical Committee" successor to the "VMEbus Manufacturers Group".
IEEE1014 has now been superseded by ANSI-VITA 1 "VME64"  which is a superset of IEEE1014.
(IEEE catalog for procurement of document).

IEC60821

"VMEbus - Microprocessor system bus for 1 byte to 4 byte data"
Published in 1987, revised in 1991.
This is to all intents and purposes identical to IEEE1014. It was "fast-tracked"  by the International Electrotechnical Commission and standardisted in 1987. Bilingual, English/French.
(IEC home page for procurement of document).

EN60821

This is IEC60821 as approved by CENELEC, the European standardisation body.
(CENELEC home page for procurement of document).

Current Standards

ANSI VITA 1-1994 - VME64

A superset of IEEE1014 / IEC60821. 64 bit multiplexed data transfers and other improvements over IEEE1014.
(VITA home page for purchase of ANSI document).

ISO/IEC 15776

ANSI VITA-1 "VME64" was approved by the ISO/IEC in 1998.

Extensions

ANSI VITA 1.1-1997 VME64 Extensions - "VME64x"

ANSI/VITA1.1-1997 (last draft version)
The VITA Standards Organisation (VSO) has developed further extensions to VMEbus known as VME64 Extensions ("VME64x"), including extra power, geographical addressing, provision for "hot swap", test buses and a 2-edged data transfer protocol which will allow a doubling of the available bandwidth to 160 Mbyte/s.
(VITA home page for purchase of ANSI document).

VME64 Extensions for Physics and Other Applications  - "VME64xP" (or "VIPA")

VITA23-199x (latest draft)
The VMEbus International Physics Association ("VIPA"), a grouping of physics interests in Europe (ESONE VMEbus Study Group), North America (NIM VME-P Committee) and Japan is working with the VSO to produce a set of recommended practices aimed at providing on top of VME64x, a 9U form factor, additional extra power and other features to adapt VME64x to applications in physics research.

The document is in the final stages of its ANSI ballot process, preliminary to it being homologated as an ANSI standard.

VME320

An enabling technology which will permit 320Mbyte/s transfers on a VMEbus backplane.

2eSST - Source Synchrous Transfer Protocol

A source synchronous transfer protocol for VMEbus, designed to exploit high speed (e.g. VME320)  backplanes. It describes synchronous data block transfers at up to 320 Mbyte/s and a broadcast mode.

Under development in the VITA Standards Organisation.

VME64x Live Insertion System Requirements

Covers the exploitation of the live-insertion features described in the VME64x document.

Under development in the VITA Standards Organisation.
